die bedeutendste der Cookinseln im Südwestpazifik, 67 km2, 9 700 Einwohner; vulkanischen Ursprungs, bis 653 m über dem Meeresspiegel, von einem Korallenriff umgeben, mit dem Verwaltungssitz der Cookinseln, Avarua; Obst- und Gemüsebau (auch für den Export), Kopragewinnung; Tourismus; internationaler Flughafen (seit 1973). - Tempelplattformen (Marae) zeugen von alter polynesischen Besiedlung. - Der vom South Pacific Forum initiierte Vertrag von Rarotonga vom 6. 8. 1985 (in Kraft seit 11. 12. 1986) legte für das Gebiet des Südpazifik das Verbot fest, Kernwaffen zu produzieren, zu erwerben, zu erproben, zu lagern oder anzuwenden. Damit wurde eine weitere kernwaffenfreie Zone errichtet. Nachdem bereits Russland und China dem Vertrag beigetreten waren, unterzeichneten ihn 1996 auch die USA, Frankreich und Großbritannien.
